Driving Innovation in Water Management: Adopting New Technologies in the Water Sector

The Urban Water Management and Hydroinformatics Group spearheaded a transformative workshop on April 10, 2025, titled “Adopting New Technologies in the Water Sector”.
The event convened 22 participants, representatives from EYDAP (Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company), DEYA Larissa, and DEYA Syros, to explore cutting-edge strategies for building resilient, sustainable water systems.

Workshop Highlights: Bridging Technology and Practice

The workshop opened by Prof. Christos Makropoulos (NTUA), who emphasized the importance of bridging technology, innovation, and practice for resilient water systems.
EYDAP’s presentation, held by Leonidas Koutsoumplis and Phani Miskaki, showcased real-time water quality monitoring, predictive analytics (enabling 48-hour intervention capabilities), and infrastructure upgrades. Discussions focused on scaling tools to reduce leakage and energy costs.
Panagiotis Dimas (NTUA) highlighted the group’s latest research, by presenting ML-driven tools for leakage calculations in extended water distribution networks and an integrated asset management software solution for pipe replacement prioritization and hydraulic pressure management.
Dimitrios Vakondios (DEYA Syros) shared insights from the RECREATE project, on renewable-powered desalination strategies, addressing cost-efficiency and sustainability debates.
Georgios Bariamis (NTUA) introduced the WaterWise Hub, and its role in fostering quadruple-helix collaborations (academia, industry, government, citizens) for circular water practices.
Stella Kalousiou and Vasileios Banagis (DEYA Larissa’s) demonstrated GIS applications and smart metering systems for urban water digitization.

Georgios Karagiannis (EYDAP Executive Director of Water Supply) highlighted the challenges in municipal collaboration and energy-intensive infrastructure upgrades, advocating for unified action. The open discussion explored barriers to innovation adoption, cross-sector partnerships, and aligning policies with technological advancements.

The workshop concluded with a consensus: accelerating the water sector’s digital and sustainable transition demands bold collaboration.

The NTUA group extends its gratitude to all participants for their expertise and spirited dialogue
