    ABOUT COOLING HAVENS

COOLING HAVENS addresses the escalating climate crisis in Athens by installing water-powered public interventions to create new blue and green infrastructure.

These interventions will serve as natural cooling agents and community engagement platforms, raising awareness for water conservation and integrating water into urban planning.

    THE CHALLENGE

Athens struggles with extreme urban heat and periodic floods, exacerbated by the lack of water elements and water-sensitive urban design solutions.

With 80% of its urban area consisting of impermeable surfaces, the city needs innovative solutions to mitigate climate impacts and enhance livability.

    VISION

COOLING HAVENS envisions a resilient and livable Athens, where water elements are reintegrated into the urban fabric to mitigate heat and flood risks.

The project aims to foster a water-centric ethos in urban planning, turning public spaces into vibrant, sustainable environments.

    OBJECTIVES
    1. Install Water-Powered Interventions: Create blue and green infrastructure to provide natural cooling and flood mitigation.
    2. Enhance Community Engagement: Use interventions as platforms for community education and engagement on water conservation.
    3. Integrate Water into Urban Planning: Promote water-sensitive urban design to improve livability and resilience.
    4. Foster Collaboration: Engage a diverse range of stakeholders in co-creating sustainable urban solutions.

    OUR ROLE IN THE PROJECT

UWMH collaborates with the Municipality of Athens and other partners to design and implement the water-powered interventions.

We will also develop educational programs and community engagement activities to promote water conservation.
